For us who took part in the venture, it was so beyond doubt. We have shared a high endeavour: we have witnessed scenes of beauty and grandeur; we have built up a lasting comradeship among ourselves and we have seen the fruits of that comradeship ripen into achievement. We shall not forget those moments of great living upon that mountain.

Adventurous Journey – the road that shapes characters

Within the Award programme, the Adventurous Journey represents more than a simple trip into an unfamiliar space. It is a structured educational experience in which every step becomes an exercise in learning, and the distance covered turns into an authentic journey toward self-discovery and connection with others.

This stage is designed to challenge young people to step beyond their comfort zones, working with the team in unpredictable situations, develop navigation skills, and make responsible decisions in real-life contexts. It is not about competition, but about a process of exploration, of nature, of the team, and of one’s own inner resources.

The ultimate purpose of the Adventurous Journey is learning through discovery. In a natural environment, often simple yet full of challenges, participants develop essential values such as trust, perseverance, solidarity, and respect for the environment. Every moment, whether it involves walking along trails, facing harsh weather, navigating terrain, or making decisions, becomes an opportunity for awareness, preparation, and deep connection with the world around them.

The Adventurous Journey is not only about reaching a destination, but about what is built along the way. It is one of the most valuable components of the Award programme, as it brings together challenge and reflection, movement and meaning, effort and the joy of shared achievement.

Purpose of the Adventurous Journey

The Adventurous Journey fosters a spirit of exploration and curiosity as young people plan and complete a journey alongside a small team of peers. Working together, each team sets a specific, challenging, yet attainable goal that shapes the focus and activities of their journey. This may involve exploring, researching, or investigating aspects of the natural world.

The core aim of the Adventurous Journey is to build teamwork through the shared experience of preparing for and undertaking both Practice and Qualifying Journeys. Along the way, teams confront real-world challenges presented by their environment.

More than just a camping trip, the journey can include discovering local landmarks, cycling between towns, visiting historical sites, or deepening environmental understanding. The possibilities are vast. Success in the AJ depends on initiative, clear communication, and determination. Participants gain a strong sense of achievement, independence, and insight.

With the right training, careful planning, and proper supervision, the Adventurous Journey safely encourages young people to push beyond their comfort zones while embracing new challenges as a team.
